Why use a dog to find bedbugs?

Dogs provide the fastest, most accurate bed bug detection. Although dogs have been used successfully for decades to detect drugs and locate explosives, it is only recently that man’s best friend has become the latest weapon in the war on bed bugs.  This is because dogs are extremely good at discriminating minute amounts of target scents even in the presence of high concentrations of non-target smells.  A dog’s nose is so sensitive it can detect just a few target scent molecules from trillions of background odor molecules.  This is over a million times more sensitive than any human being.  Southland Pest Control’s certified bedbug dogs are the fastest, most reliable way to diagnose a bed bug infestation available today.

What guarantee is offered after bedbug treatment?

After the initial inspection and treatment, Southland Pest Control will return to your east Los Angeles county home, office or hotel within 3-7 days to inspect with our service dog. If the dog alerts to the presence of bedbugs, a free re-treatment of the affected areas will be performed until the problem has been controlled.

What are bed bugs?

Cimicidae (commonly called bedbugs) are small parasitic insects that prefer to feed on human blood. All insects in this family live by feeding exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals. The name "bed bug" is derived from the insect’s preferred habitat of houses and especially beds or other areas where people sleep. Although bed bugs are not strictly nocturnal, they’re mostly active at night and are capable of feeding unnoticed on their hosts. By the 1940s, bedbugs were considered to have been eradicated in developed countries like the USA. Due to increased international travel, however, and changes in pest control practices and insecticide resistance, bedbugs have made a resurgence in these same countries. It is important to note that bedbug females can lay more than 200 eggs in her 10 month lifespan. Newly hatched bedbugs are almost colorless and this trait makes them hard to spot. As they grow, they’ll shed their skin five times and require a blood meal for each molt.

My house is clean, why do I have bedbugs?

Unfortunately, cleanliness does not keep bedbugs out of your Los Angeles residence or office. They only need a warm host and plenty of hiding spaces. Even the most elegant hotels, offices or residences can harbor bedbugs. This is because bedbugs don’t typically stay on their human hosts after eating, instead they take refuge in clothes or luggage left nearby. As a result, you may bring them home with you after a vacation or business trip. Since they can also travel with second-hand furniture, it is possible to pick them up at a garage or yard sale. Other varieties of bedbugs prefer to feed on birds or bats, and may take up residence in your attic or eaves. When these animals migrate, it is possible for the bedbugs to stay in the home and feed on humans living there.

Where do bedbugs live?

Los Angeles, like most areas of the world, is not immune to bedbug infestations. In homes, bedbugs can be found in mattress seams, box springs, bed frames and headboards. In offices and hotels, they can be found in upholstered furniture seams, under carpeting near baseboards, under peeling paint and loose wallpaper, as well as under light switch plates or electrical outlets.

How do I know if my home or office has bedbugs?

Common signs of bedbug infestations are dark specks found typically in mattress seams, bloody smears on bed sheets and empty exoskeletons. The best method to find out if you have an infestation is to contact a pest professional from Southland Pest Control for an inspection.

How does Southland Pest Control treat bedbugs?

Pest control companies around the Los Angeles area mostly rely on chemical, heat or fumigation treatments to remove a bedbug infestation. These methods may work temporarily, but if they do not treat the entire structure, there is a possibility that bedbugs could return. To prevent another infestation, Southland Pest Control uses certified and trained bed bug detecting dogs to find and identify all hiding places of the bed bugs. Once the problem areas have been identified, the pest technician will then treat your home using a chemicals, heat or fumigation.

Are There Alternative Methods Available Instead Of Fumigation?

There are several alternatives to localized chemical treatments. There are, however, only two methods for whole-house eradication of drywood termites: fumigation and whole-house heat treatment. Other methods such as electro gun, microwave, and freezing with liquid nitrogen are local or spot treatments designed to eradicate termites in a specific area. However, they are not intended for whole house eradication and therefore are NOT alternatives to fumigation. The University of California, Berkeley, conducted a study for the California Structural Pest Control Board on these methods. A free, condensed version is available on the California Structural Pest Control Board’s web site.

Green Tech Heat Pest Eradication

Heat is an ecological and technological breakthrough in treating entire structures like single family homes, apartments, condominiums, hospitals, nursing facilities, medical laboratories, offices and industrial complexes. Heat eliminates drywood termites, powderpost beetles, carpenter ants and other wood destroying insects.

Heat Is The Most Effective Method of Bed Bug Control

In a five year study of termite eradication methods, ordered by the California Structural Pest Control Board and conducted by the University of California, heat was the only non-chemical method to successfully treat entire structures. Other non-chemical methods such as Freezing, Electrogun and Microwave may be effective in small areas, but cannot treat entire structures in one application.

Heat Treats Any Size Area With A Single Application In 6 To 8 Hours

Trained service technicians use specially designed heaters. The Heat flows through Mylar ducts to the designated treatment areas and is confined by thermal drapes. Inside temperatures are monitored by a stat-of-the-art digital thermometer and needle thin temperature probes to ensure that wood core temperatures are maintained at levels which are lethal to wood destroying insects.

Cost Effective Bed Bug Treatments

Traditional bed bug detection methods are time consuming, labor intensive, and error prone.  When clients can’t be certain of the exact locations of their bed bug infections, they often choose to discard furniture and belongings and treat their entire home just to be safe.  Because bed bug detection dogs can search an average hotel room in less than 2 minutes with over 95% accuracy, over-treatment and unnecessary property disposal costs can be eliminated.

Peace Of Mind

Research supports that if a dog alerts, there is a high statistical probability that bed bugs are present.  The accuracy of a human technician finding a bed bug infestation is approximately 30%. That leaves a 70% chance that a "clean room" is actually infested.  If the dog does not alert you can know with greater certainty that you are bed bug free.  A canine is the most accurate method of detecting bed bugs available today.
